Hari's solution to this problem is a four-step process called "The Attention Revolution:" For example, he points out that social media algorithms often prioritize content that is most likely to generate a reaction or engagement, rather than what is most important or relevant. He cites numerous studies and examples to support his argument, including the ways in which social media companies manipulate our emotions and the negative impact on our ability to form deep and meaningful relationships. ![]() Hari argues that the constant notifications and distractions of social media are having a detrimental effect on our ability to focus, leading to increased anxiety, depression, and overall dissatisfaction with our lives. The book provides insight into the ways in which social media platforms are designed to keep us hooked and distracted, and offers practical solutions for regaining control of our attention and living a more fulfilling life. ![]() "Stolen Focus" explores the effects of social media on our attention spans, mental health, and overall well-being. ![]() ![]() ![]() The prisoner-of-war camp functioned as such from 1940 until January of 1945. There were three main components of the camp complex: the POW camp, the "residence camp" ( Aufenthaltslager), and the "prisoners' camp" ( Häftlingslager). The Bergen-Belsen camp complex was composed of numerous camps, established at various times during its existence. ![]() Thus, while the German government placed the Bergen-Belsen camp complex within the concentration camp system, the WVHA initially gave it a special designation. In April 1943 the SS Economic-Administration Main Office (SS Wirtschafts-Verwaltungshauptamt WVHA) which administered the concentration camp system, took over a portion of Bergen-Belsen and converted it first into a civilian residence camp and, later, into a concentration camp. ![]() Until 1943, Bergen-Belsen was exclusively a prisoner-of-war (POW) camp. It was in a location south of the small towns of Bergen and Belsen, about 11 miles north of Celle, Germany. German military authorities established the Bergen-Belsen camp in 1940. Among them was Anne Frank, the most well known child diarist of the Holocaust era. Approximately 50,000 people died in the Bergen-Belsen camp complex. ![]() ![]() ![]() This essay will map the spheres of his journey across time and cultures as a means of assessing themes of conquest, colonization, race and identity formation, religion, and gender on the frontiers of empire in the native ground. This shaman of syncretic belief systems appropriated a highly unusual degree of power, both institutional and self-authorized. Although his personal life can only be factually reconstructed through subjective Spanish political lenses, it is possible to form a portrait of the man by examining the cultural spheres through which he passed, from Sub-Saharan Africa to Morocco, from Iberia to the Caribbean, from Florida to the Rio Grande Valley, and from Mexico City to his death in the Zuñi pueblos of modern New Mexico and Arizona. Esteban’s journey is an African story that defies historiographic stereotypes of Spanish imperial conquest and colonization in the Atlantic world. As one of the four surviving members of the ill-starred 1528 Pánfilo de Narváez expedition, the only references to him are contained in narratives and records of Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Fray Marcos de Niza, and the Coronado expedition, as well as colonial administrative correspondence of the viceroy and archbishop of New Spain. ![]() Estebanico, the Moroccan black slave of conquistador Andrés de Dorantes, has garnered sporadic scholarly attention throughout the twentieth century and in recent years. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Notes From The Author: The following is a short story I wrote in the Elantris world back in January of 2006. Might I suggest listening to the book first? This story won't work at all for you if you haven't. Either way, if you haven't listened to Elantris, this contains major spoilers. Some of you may find it interesting to read this ahead of time I put it in the annotation, however, as I know others would rather enjoy the story without bias beforehand, then read my thoughts afterward. In the annotation, I've written a further explanation of why I wrote this piece. This story talks about one of those holes it is meant to be read after you've finished the novel and takes place during the events of the climax. In the back of my mind, I knew what happened. There were always a few holes in the manuscript where I decided not to include viewpoints or sections of explanation in the name of streamlining, particularly at the end. At that point, Elantris had only been out in stores for about seven or eight months, but I actually hadn't written anything new on the story or world since 2000, when I'd finished the first draft of the original book. ![]() ![]() ![]() Brown Allen Milgrom BACKSTAGE PASS: Who Shot Down Man from Atlantis?.
